Energy optimization in IP-over-WDM networks

چکیده
The energy crisis and environmental protection are gaining increasing concern in recent years. ICT (Information and Communication Technology) has a significant impact on the total electricity consumption all over theworld. Telecomnetworks, being an important part of ICT, consume significant energy since more network equipment is deployed annually. Specifically, in IP-over-WDM networks, energy is consumed by network elements at both IP and WDM layers. Routers in the IP layer are the largest energy consumer in this architecture, and current network infrastructures have no energy-saving scheme, so a large amount of energy is wasted when traffic load is low. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to save energy in IP-over-WDM networks by shutting down idle line cards and chassis of routers based on time-of-the-day network traffic variation. A method based on Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is proposed to ensure that the energy cost incurred by the IP routers and optical cross-connects is minimized by our approach. We also propose some possible approaches to minimize potential traffic disruption when the network elements are shut down. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

MASTER THESIS Energy Efficiency in IP over WDM Networks
In the last decade, energy efficiency in backbone networks has become an important problem due to the significant growth in the Internet traffic. A very promising solution to solve this problem in Internet Protocol (IP) over Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) networks is the Virtual Topology Adaptation approach, which permits adapting network resources by following a dynamic daily traffic p...
متن کاملEnergy-Efficient Opaque IP over WDM Networks with Survivability and Security Constraints
Mixed deployment of sleep-enabled and non-sleep-enabled router cards is suggested at each node of an IP over WDM network along with survivability and security constraints. This is used to design a green network which is observed to reduce energy consumption (by up to 28% for an example network) compared to a network where the router cards are not sleep-enabled. OCIS codes: (060.4250) Networks; ...
متن کاملPower-Aware Logical Topology Optimization for IP-over-WDM Networks Based on Per-Lightpath Power Consumption Model
This paper considers the problem of logical topology optimization in an IP-over-WDM network, with the objective to minimize the total power consumption used to support the given traffic demands. While there are several power consuming devices in a backbone WDM network, it is assumed that major power consumption occurs at IP router ports, which are termination points of optical connections or li...
متن کاملBounds for Energy-Efficient Survivable IP Over WDM Networks With Network Coding
In this work we establish analytic bounds for the energy efficiency of the 1+1 survivable IP over WDM networks using network coding. The analytic bounds are shown to be in close agreement with our previously reported results. They provide verification of the MILP and heuristics proposed previously and an efficient, compact means of evaluating the network results, and allow the performance of la...
متن کاملAn Integrated Routing Mechanism for Cross-Layer Traffic Engineering in IP over WDM Networks
One approach to accommodating IP traffic on a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network is to construct a logical topology, establishing a set of lightpaths between nodes. The lightpaths carry IP traffic but do not require any electronic packet processing at intermediate nodes, thereby reducing the load on those nodes. When the IP and WDM networks have independent routing functions, howeve...
